Genetic Coat Series
This are three different types: smooth, wire, and long.
The first group has the following alleles: S (dominant smooth),s (recessive longhair).
The next group has the following alleles: W (wirehair), w (non-wirehair).
Smooth hair is genetically SS or Ss, Wire must be recessive ww
- Smooth (S) is dominant to long hair (s) and recessive to wirehair (W). This means that
if one parent is smooth (SS), is mated to another smooth SSit can produce only smooth puppies, when mated to a smooth (Ss"carrier") it can only produce smooth puppies.
- If one parent is smooth (Ss), is mated to another smooth SSit can produce only smooth puppies, when mated to a smooth (Ss carrier) it will produce 75% smooth puppies and 25% long hair. With 2 carriers.
Long hair is genetically ww ss.
If a long hair (ss) is mated to a smooth (Ss)it will produce 50% smooth (carriers) and 50% long hair. Mated with a smooth (SS)you will get 100% smooth (carrier) puppies.
Wire hair is genetically WW or Ww.
- Wirehair (W) is dominant or incompletely dominant to smooth and long hair. This means that only one parent has to be wirehair (WW or Ww) in order to produce a wirehair.
