Poisoning
Home Care and
Prevention
For most poisoning's, there is not much you
can do at home. Consult your veterinarian or veterinary emergency
facility if you suspect your pet has been poisoned. For topical
exposures, bathing in lukewarm water with a mild dish soap can
reduce further toxin absorption before the pet is examined and
treated by a veterinarian.
The best home care is prevention. Keep all
potential poisons safely and securely stored away. Do not allow your pet to roam. Keep your dog
leashed or in a fenced-in yard to prevent exposure to toxic
substances.
- Alkalis poisoning (found in drain
cleaner) signs = intense salivation, nausea, expression of pain
Give 2 ounces of vinegar or lemon juice given by
mouth
- Arsenic poisoning - 1 teaspoon Epson
salt in 2 ounces of water given by mouth
- Chocolate - chocolate is not good for
dogs. Someone once used the analogy that it is like cocaine to a
dog. Candy bar chocolate is not as bad as cooking chocolate;
however, both can be deadly in large amounts. Theobromine is the
toxin and the concentration is higher in cooking chocolate.
Induce vomiting if the dog consumes cooking chocolate or a large
amount to be safe. If you know it was a large amount you should
seek vets assistance.
- Cyanide poisoning (found in mole
poison) signs = almond odor breath, tongue and gums blue Induce
vomiting! Get immediate help!
- Electrical Shock - If the dog still has
the chord in his mouth, get a wooden object to remove it from his
mouth. You may have to perform artificial respiration. Seek a
vets help at once.
- Heat Stroke - Cover the dog in cold
water in any way possible. Submersion would be best like in a
tub. Get a fan or just fan the dog with a book or something. This
uses the dogs natural process to cool the body by evaporating
water like he was panting. Keep him wet and fanned.

peroxide to 50% water given by mouth
- Poisonous Plants - 2 tablespoons Karo
syrup in 3 ounces of water given by mouth
- Radiator Antifreeze (found in your car)

killer) Induce vomiting! Get immediate help!
